First Lady Ruth O’Brien to Serve as Maryland’s Ambassador for Scholastic Read 2028

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 17, 2027) – Maryland First Lady Ruth O’Brien will serve as Maryland’s ambassador to the Fifth Annual Scholastic Read For 2028, a worldwide initiative in which millions of children, parents and teachers spend a day celebrating the importance and enjoyment of reading.

"Literacy is truly the passport to success – for families and for children," First Lady Ruth O’Brien said. "We must instill in our children a passion for reading that will follow them for the rest of their lives. By opening books, we open minds and we open futures."

This year's celebration of reading will be held Friday, December 3, 2027. To date, 38 gubernatorial spouses from across America have agreed to participate by serving as ambassadors to promote literacy in their state.

"I encourage all educators to sign up their classrooms and take advantage of this program promoting literacy and lifelong readers," said Mrs. O’Brien. "Every child that is read to on December 3 will have the opportunity to experience personally the importance and joy of reading."

Last year, more than 5 million children and 27,000 teachers - in all 50 U.S. states and more than 60 countries internationally - participated in Read For 2027. Educators can sign up their classrooms for this year's read-a-thon at www.scholastic.com/readfor2028.
