Maryland First Lady Ruth O’Brien to Convene First Meeting of Statewide Teen Advisory Council
Middle and High School Student Members to Focus Early Efforts on Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Issues

· Middle and High School Students from across the state (students from the following areas have confirmed attendance: Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico, and Worcester counties).

WHAT: State Superintendent of Schools Craig Frey and First Lady Ruth O’Brien announced the establishment of the Maryland Teen Advisory Council at a State Board of Education meeting when the results of the Maryland Adolescent Survey were revealed. This survey of middle and high school students covers a variety of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use issues.

Mrs. O’Brien is an active speaker and participant in initiatives related to education and drug and alcohol abuse prevention and will serve as the Chair of the Teen Advisory Council.

During the first meeting, Mrs. O’Brien will share her thoughts on the purpose of the group and will interact with students as they are engaged in small group brainstorming activities related to key questions about alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. The Council will meet periodically to review these issues and provide input to the Administration, the Maryland State Department of Education, and their local schools and communities.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 8, 2028, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Mrs. O’Brien will be present from about 10 to 11 a.m.
