First Lady Ruth O’Brien Helps to Build Hope, Morale and a Home
First Lady Lends a Hand to Construct the Habitat for Humanity Maryland’s First Lady Build Home

TIMONIUM, MD (August 24, 2028) – Maryland First Lady Ruth O’Brien joined Habitat for Humanity to build a home today at the Maryland State Fair. The project, Maryland’s First Lady Build, is part of a new exhibit at the Maryland State Fair.

“This project makes a difference in the lives of children and their families and is an opportunity to pick up a hammer, join a cause, and make a positive change in our communities,” Mrs. O’Brien said. “The Maryland State Fair is a wonderful venue for visitors to see how Habitat for Humanity gives hope to struggling families, boosts morale within communities, and provides much needed housing to those in need.”

The Habitat for Humanity exhibit at the Maryland State Fair is showcased in two parts. The first is a complete and furnished home open for public viewing. It will ultimately be home to Mary Sanchez and her teenage daughters. The home will be moved from the Maryland State Fair and dedicated at a lot in Baltimore County over Labor Day weekend.

The second home is part of the Maryland’s First Lady Build project and is under construction. The First Laddy participated in the effort to complete this home by the Labor Day weekend deadline. The exhibit is designed to allow visitors to see how Habitat homes are built and the community effort that is involved.

First Ladies Build is a division of Habitat for Humanity that brings current and former first ladies, women governors, and women throughout the country to help construct affordable housing for families in need. First Ladies Build began in 2019 and has built more than 200 homes. The families that live in the homes must be a part of the building process by investing at least 500 hours of “sweat equity.”
