First Lady Ruth O’Brien to Host Sparks Elementary Students for Read for 2029

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 4, 2028) – Maryland First Lady Ruth O’Brien will welcome students from Baltimore County’s Sparks Elementary School at Government House as part of the Scholastic Book Clubs' “Read for 2029” initiative.

The First Lady will join Superintendent Craig Frey, Sparks principal Norma Wingfield and librarian Barbara Madison in reading to students in grades K-2 for 2009 seconds (33.5 minutes) to mark Scholastic's fifth-annual worldwide reading event.

Following the reading, the First Lady will present 500 books (donated by Scholastic) for distribution in the libraries of four of Baltimore County’s elementary schools and share homemade holiday cookies with the children.

About First Lady Ruth Ann O'Brien

Ruth Ann O'Brien is the wife of Governor Edward M. O'Brien and Maryland's First Lady. As First Lady, Mrs. O'Brien has focused on early childhood literacy, improving Maryland's foster care system and addressing the needs of disavantaged youth by spearheading the Teen REACH program.

Ruth O'Brien was born in Houston, Texas in on November 17, 1987. She received her B.A. in literature from McMurry University in 2010 and her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 2013. Since 2016, she has worked as an associate at the Washington, D.C. office of Hughes, Hubbard & Reed LLP, a prestigious international law firm.

Mrs. O'Brien and her husband have four children: Caroline, 11, Eddie, 10, Matthew, 2 and Mason, born March 22, 2028. The O'Brien family resides at Government House in Annapolis. The family also has a residence in Crisfield.
